Mercyhurst University biologists have received a $30,000 grant to study the impact of cold winter temperatures on the hemlock wooly adelgid, a small, aphidlike insect that is decimating the hemlock trees of eastern U.S. forests.
Mercyhurst University has entered into an affiliation agreement with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), bringing to five the number of affiliations with regional medical institutions that allow qualifying Mercyhurst students to accelerate their education in the health professions.
It’s all part of a Campus Ecology Fellowship Ellen Teygart, senior biology major, received from the National Wildlife Federation. The goal of her research is to increase carbon sequestration in soil as a way of offsetting the greenhouse gases produced by electricity consumption on Mercyhurst’s campuses.
